Hungary first hosted a Formula 1 Championship Grand Prix in 1936. But with the onset of WWII, post-war depression, reconstruction and the rise of Communism, it really wasn’t until the 1960’s that motor sport in Hungary took root again. The first races were held for Formula Junior cars at Budapest’s Ferihegy Airport. In the 1980s, the F1 Championship organisers were looking to host a Grand Prix in the Eastern European Bloc and were negotiating with the Russian government to have Moscow host an event. However, in the end it was the Hungarians with their enthusiasm for motor racing that won out.
Originally a street race was planned for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but in the end a brand new circuit was built outside of Budapest. The Hungaroring opened its gates in 1986, after only eight months of construction. The first F1 Grand Prix event was held in August of the same year and was an enormous success with close to 200,000 spectators cheering on the drivers. This Grand Prix was won by Nelson Piquet driving for Williams-Honda, second place was Ayrton Senna for Lotus-Renault and third place was Nigel Mansell for Williams-Honda.
Other historical moments for the Hungarian Grand Prix include Nigel Mansell’s amazing win in the 1989 Grand Prix. Starting in 12th place on a circuit that is known for its tight structure and difficulty in overtaking, Mansell clinched the podium. In 1990, Thierry Boutsen pulled off an amazing feat by beating Ayrton Senna by just 0.3 seconds and taking the podium. The Hungarian Grand Prix also gave Damon Hill his first-ever Grand Prix win back in 1997.
Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton have won the most Hungarian Grand Prix races with four wins each. They are followed by racing legend Ayrton Senna, with three wins.

Because of the very good view of the race track the Bronze 2 Grandstand is very popular on the Hungaroring. In addition, there is a giant TV screen opposite the grandstand. The Bronze 2 Grandstand has over 3500 seats.
The general admission area surrounds the biggest part of the circuit. Since the surrounding of the circuit is very hilly, there's a good view at some spots of the general admission area, mostly however you can see a shorter part of the circuit than from the grandstands. There are no giant TVs in the general admission area.
Built in 2003, the Gold 4 Grandstand is located directly on the end of the Start/Finish straight. The first turn has been completely reconstructed in 2003 with a 400m longer start/finish straight and a more tighter first turn which makes overtaking more easier and therefore brings more action to the spectator. There is a giant TV screen opposite the grandstand. All of the 2500 seats are numbered and equipped with bucket seats.
The Silver 3 Grandstand (5800 seats) was built in 2000 and is located in the last curve before the start/finish. You have a view of the entire start/finish line as well as the 2 previous curves and as far as to the Silver 2 Grandstand. Like all other grandstands, this one has its own video wall. All of the 5800 seats are numbered and have bucket seats.
As a visitor of the Super Gold Grandstand you have the best view of the start and finish line, pit lane and team garages. In addition, there are giant TV screens opposite the grandstand. The Super Gold Grandstand has over 7600 numbered bucket seats. The Super Gold Grandstand is also the only covered Grandstand at the Hungaroring. Behind the Super Gold Grandstand is the F1 Village (Official Teams Merchandising and Exhibition Area). Of all the Grands Prix we go to this Super Gold Grandstand has one of the best views of the Start Finish Line, Garages and Pit Lane. And at the low price it is offered it puts other circuits to shame.

Great stay in Mamaison Andrassy...good location, spacious rooms, friendly staff, clean, good breakfast and close to local transport. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Staff happy to provide tickets for local visits eg bus sightseeing tours, bus and underground tickets etc and proved advice on what to see or do. One of our best hotel stays thus far and the room was spotless and had plenty of room to move.
Just a few lines to say a big thank you for organising a superb trip to the GP last weekend. Karen and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (well, for the first three days!) at the circuit and enjoyed meeting the rest of the MotoExpress trippers. Our very best wishes to you both – I am sorry we never made that bar bike session as we really enjoyed the dinner and drinks on Sunday night and were looking forward to carrying on from there! We hope to enjoy a MotoExpress even again in the future and wish you continued success with it!
What a hotel, it was perfect in every way. The staff and the hotel could not have been better. Situated on the beautiful Andrassy avenue, this hotel was so relaxing and had everything you need. I would return here without a doubt.
Just wanted to say thanks for another great weekend. As ever all arrangements were flawless and we certainly had one of the best races to watch for a very long time. We were all saying what a great event this is to attend as the transfers to the circuit are so quick and easy and that value for money is simply great. On the last evening we went to "Tigris" and the meal was exceptional. Thanks again and see you next year.
We invite guests to return to this section after they have attended the race and to share their enjoyment of the event with others. Send your feedback.
